Spring is commonly considered the time of the year when the earth begins to awaken from the cold, harsh winter months. Spring is rooted in feminine energy and fertility, and Texas has an opportunity for a great growing season. But you may be surprised to find out that a fall garden in Texas is an even better opportunity for creating harmony around your home.
Why is this? From vegetables and herbs to trees and perennials, fall gardens in Texas offer the perfect balance of temperature, moisture, and time.
When to Plant a Fall Garden in Texas
Usually by fall, the blazing heat in Austin finally starts to let up. After the first good rain of the season, we can begin our fall projects. Plants no longer have to fight the constant heat and drought and can focus on developing. If you want a successful, beautiful fall garden that extends into spring and beyond, a trick for establishing healthy fall plants is that they generally do better when started from transplants than from seed. Transplants are helpful for jump-starting your fall garden and for perennials like Texas sage and lantana. Start your transplants in late summer to prep for your fall garden.
Unlike in spring, when you only have a few weeks before 90º+ days begin, cooler months help your roots grow and establish before the chance of freezing weather, which in Texas usually occurs in the early portion of February. This is why trees, shrubs, and perennials planted in the fall often outshine their spring-planted counterparts.
Fall Garden Timeline:
Late July to August: Start your transplants.
August to September: Start prepping beds for fall and clear out any lingering summer crops and expired annuals. Amend your soil and rebuild any beds as needed.
After the First Rainfall: Begin direct planting and transplanting. The warm soil still encourages growth and expansion. Continue planting!
Fall Gardens = Fewer Pests and Problems
Bugs can be one of the biggest frustrations with spring planting. Most of our problem pests in the fall, like aphids, whiteflies, and spider mites, are less active in the cooler months.
Less Water Stress
At Shamballah Home and Gardens, we are committed to sustainability and that is why we proudly partner with the City of Austin Water Waterwise Rebate Program to help homeowners transform high-water-use lawns into vibrant, water-efficient gardens.
Planting in the fall helps on that front, too. With milder temperatures and the occasional seasonal rains, your soil will hold moisture longer, which means your plants need less frequent watering to establish.
At Shamballah Home & Gardens, we love designing landscapes that balance beauty with sustainability, and planting in the fall supports both!
