Bringing Living Plants Into Commercial Indoor Spaces (And Why Most People Get It Wrong)

When it comes to indoor landscaping, the biggest mistake isn’t choosing the wrong plant. It’s not trying at all.

Too often, commercial spaces either abandon the idea of living greenery or settle for artificial substitutes, overlooking the essential role that living plants play in nurturing the spirit and energy of a place. When living plants are included, the most common challenge is a lack of harmony between the plant and its environment, and an absence of the care systems that allow these beings to truly thrive.

At Shamballah Home & Gardens, our approach to indoor commercial spaces, whether it’s a quiet waiting room, a sunlit atrium, or a restorative spa, starts with understanding what the space and its users actually need. Here’s how our process works.

Getting the Environment Right

Light is the foundation for plants and the first element we consider. For spaces relying on artificial lighting, there are two workable approaches: introduce broad-spectrum lighting in targeted areas (plants need blue wavelengths to thrive, though it’s worth noting that interior designers tend to have strong feelings about light tonality), or select species that have evolved to flourish in the shade of forest understories or as epiphytes on trees. In some cases, we also create subtle lighting isolated to the plants so it doesn’t affect the room’s overall atmosphere.

Beyond considering the light in the space, every indoor installation requires a thorough system in place that supports the plant’s needs in that environment. This includes considerations for spacing, water access, humidity, and air circulation. Without that plan in place, even well-matched plants won’t thrive in indoor commercial spaces.

Indoor Landscaping Maintenance is Different

It may surprise some to learn that indoor commercial landscapes are often more delicate than their outdoor counterparts and require more attention. Without the resilience of a complete ecosystem, imbalances can happen quickly, especially with pests, which can spread rapidly through enclosed spaces.

That means maintenance visits are more frequent than most clients expect, though they’re shorter and lower intensity than outdoor work. There are also no seasonal swings to plan around, so the cadence stays consistent year-round. And because most indoor installations aren’t large enough to develop the kind of self-sustaining soil biology you’d find in the ground, certain ecosystem functions have to be actively maintained by hand. Both the frequency and the technique look different than what outdoor clients typically experience.

Designing for Energy and Wellness

This is where indoor commercial spaces have a quiet advantage: many of the tools used to shape a space’s energetics, including Sacred Geometry, were originally developed for interior architecture, such as ancient temples, palaces, and ceremonial spaces. These principles have deep roots in how humans have intentionally designed indoor environments for thousands of years.

Our conversations with every client, whether it’s for a healing spa or a bustling corporate lobby, come back to the same question: what do you want people to feel when they’re in this space?  A reception area that welcomes relaxation and openness calls for a different energetic landscape than a workspace that supports clarity, vitality, and inspired thinking. The intention guides our design, allowing the space to become a vessel for the experiences you wish to nurture.

Living plants are not a mere embellishment in commercial indoor spaces. When the environment is understood, the system is built correctly, and the energetic intention is clear, they become one of the most powerful tools available for shaping how people experience a space.
